School Resource Officer Program
A PARTNERSHIP FOR OUR YOUTH
|
|
Although my time as a SRO for Westlake High School has been brief (since January '01), there have been many fulfilling rewards working with the students and staff. I have worked with many students in one-on-one and group settings. My duties do include making arrests and conducting investigations on criminal matters. However, my role is much larger than just a police officer and does not stop when an arrest has been made and the paperwork filed. I attempt to educate and counsel those students who have had legal trouble in an effort to prevent future problems. My counseling sessions have not only involved students with legal problems, but also those who are substance abusers, or who have social, academic, and family problems. Students are always welcome to discuss any problem they may have. In fact, some students just need to "blow off some steam" before they are able to relax and return to class.
Teachers and staff have also made my stay at Westlake High School very enjoyable. I feel very welcome in their classrooms anytime I am invited in as a guest speaker. During my tenure I have given various presentations on personal safety and self-defense, family and relationship violence, law enforcement careers, the School Resource Program, negative effects of using alcohol and drugs, the new tobacco law, and more. I have also assisted with the 10th grade D.A.R.E. Program, the After-Prom and Graduation Program, The Leadership Challenge and Westlake Police Department tours.
The overall reception of the SRO Program is one of acceptance and approval. Many students and staff have expressed their appreciation for having a Police Officer in the school. Many students have also expressed that they feel safe in our building. I take pride in the fact that our students can feel safe as they obtain their education and socialize with their friends at lunch and in the halls.
