D.A.R.E. Is an drug prevention program, which
utilizes uniformed officers to deliver a prevention message to students from
elementary school through high school. D.A.R.E.
Is instructed in the Westlake City Schools as well as two private
schools. The instruction begins in the third grade and continues in fifth,
seventh and tenth grade. The Westlake Police Dept. currently has two Officers
assigned to the D.A.R.E. Program.
Officer Ken Delfing was trained in April of 1991 and instructs all levels of the
program, including the instruction of new D.A.R.E. Officers at the Police Academy. Officer
Roseanna McCoy was trained in Sept. of 2001 and is currently trained in the
elementary curriculum. The D.A.R.E. program is not only an excellent way to
instruct students about the dangers of alcohol & other drugs, but serves as
a way to acclimate the youth of the City with the Police Department. The
students see the Officers outside of a patrol car and can converse and interact
in a way that shows the youth that Officers are people too.
