Westlake PD is the only police agency in the Greater
Cleveland area to have Community Service Officers. This part time position was
created in 1997 with one officer. The CSO wears a uniform and drives a marked
police car, but does not make arrests or carry a firearm. Rather, CSOs provide
support to the Patrol Division through duties such as auto lockouts, child seat
inspections, bailiff duty, directing traffic at accidents or during power
outages. In short, CSOs handle many service calls that do not require the
attention of a sworn officer. In turn, the patrol officers are able to spend
more time in monitoring traffic and patrolling the business districts and
residential subdivisions.
Currently, the CSOs are at their authorized strength of 4.
They work 7AM to 3PM and 3PM to 11PM.
